This is hard...... Damn. Star Trek = a more FUN movie, Avatar is the movie that will still be talked about in 100 years. So very hard to say.

Hi Roth! I do find the controversy fascinating as well. Back when Titanic came out, it reached #1 of all time even though pretty much every guy I knew thought it was romantic garbage, haha. But I loved it, millions of people around the world loved it, and they kept going back... not just seeing it one time. I know a lot of people who have seen Avatar more than once as well. I think the bitterness from people (esp. floating around the internet and on Twitter) is from a confusion and misunderstanding of WHY exactly this movie reached #1. Many people think its just a "ripoff" of Pocahantas and Dances with Wolves. I completely disagree and just think of it as a brilliant retelling of an OLD story (and a beautiful one) But that is just my opinion. I think people who don't understand the success are inherently bitter it's doing so well.... but Cameron is still winning with all of this hate because while all these people "don't get it" and "can't stand it," the word AVATAR is still in their mouths. They are still talking about it. And yes, 99.999% of them paid for a ticket to see it. Cameron is laughing all the way to the bank.

Hey John thanks for answering my question on the pod cast. I wanted to comment on your discussion of Conan the Barbarian. While I feel that no one can possibly replace Arnold on his performance in the movie. Let’s face it, Thespian he is not, Charismatic he is. That being said I don't feel that HHH would be a good replacement what so ever because He has never appeared to me to be barbarian huge. However to throw my hat in the ring, one person that I feel would fit the role and feel of the film is Tyler Mane. I loved him in Troy and this guy totally screams Barbarian King. I’m interested if anyone else has someone else they feel fits the role of Conan. Also for those who are into MMA, I totally could see Andrei Arlovski in the role of a supporting non speaking villain in the film.

spider man made a lot of money, however, it didn't make the most money of all time. that's why in this case, it deserves to be the best movie of the year with regards to awards. I thought Avatar was a B myself, but if I had to vote, knowing that it was the highest grossing film all time (in just a few short weeks), it would get my vote.

I guess it's hard to explain but every now and then, something comes around that is just so special that no matter what individuals feel, as a whole (The Academy), you have to hand it the crown.

Also, it's not like it was a bad movie...I've never met anyone who disliked it. So being a good movie plus $$$, it gets the honor.

Great pod casts btw...i look forward to it every few weeks. (45mins??)

Hi ADOX2525,

Yes - I am in the minority on the Yoda fight ;). I still maintain - that to me - the CG Yoda was one of the worst things.

Yeah, I think Avatar has more to say to us than just a regular fun, visual popcorn movie.

John has a debate now about whether Avatar or Star Trek is a better movie.

I think it's interesting - because you could argue that Star Trek is. BUT it certainly doesn't have as big impact or as lasting an effect on peoples psyches or in terms of an advance in the film industry.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Hi Clair!

Thank you! You know I find all the controversy that Avatar stirs up pretty interesting. As well as peoples takes on the movie. What's your take?

All The Best!

Thanks John.

Here's a question for you, maybe for the next podcast.

You've already given us a rundown of your top movies of 2009 - so with that behind us lets look to the future. What movies are you most anticipating in 2010 and what movie(s) should we (your ever loyal fans) be on the look out for this year.

john's right, it's not the same, but i get ur point that it must deserve something if it can make a lot of money, like what john said too, it's worth what ur willing to pay

looking thin john

agreed on Conan, I was all like WTF!
Vin Diesel? He can't really act much..

i think gremlins is a great movie to be 3D, imagine the crazy scenes in 2 in 3D

I LOVE YODA CGI, it made epsiodeII good

woop darkcrystal2 FTW

i can see why u picked pantsrocket's and lunchadore's lol

I agree with ROTH's comments on Avatar, yes those other films are the same but they don't communicate that fact she mentioned as well.
You focus on story so much more.
It's not the skeleton, but it is one intregal part, i felt bad about our world like Roth said, i wanted to smash my phone lol

Hey Mac,

A movie making money doesn't mean it's good.

Michael Phelps was the best swimmer. You can measure how fast he is, and he's faster (better) than everyone else.

A movie's quality is not measured by how much money it makes.

Spider-Man 3 is one of the worst films of the decade... but it made TONS of money.
