Here’s my review for the new Peter Jackson film “The Lovely Bones” I actually thought I had posted this already… apparently I didn’t.

I am so torn. I think if I knew the murder was in the film it would be hard for me to watch because there are a few things that are very hard to stomach. Rape scenes keep me bothered for DAYS and I imagine something like this would too. That being said.. when I watch a scene like that, does it make me hate the person that did it even more? Yes. So, by showing the horrible deed, while horrific, works to help you understand the evil..

i know what you mean, especially rape, sometimes it can be less exagerated and it still bothers me for days

eg. Saturday Night Fever, horrifying, not just physically but emotionally and psychologically for the “character”

she tries to impress travoltas character for ages, then eventually is thanked by getting abused by a series of his friends in the back seat of the car he is driving and u just hear her crying. Thats how i remember it anyway. I thought it was just a film about disco dancing.

these sorta things just makes my fists clench and makes me feel like i wanna fight the “rapist” even though i know i would lose to the fictional character lol or Travolta lol

sometimes it makes me dislike the actor in other movies, i just cant help it. maybe i was raped in a previous life i dunno

SNF is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time.. even *with* that scene.. and I do know exactly what you are talking about. It is heartbreaking to watch.

well before i watch this video it looks like John has enjoyed it, judging by the frame that is shown behind the play button, he seems to be enjoying it himself.

you might wanna change that bud, not your best photo ;P

nice review John, very balanced with all the criticisims backed up with good points.

Sounds like that would have benefitted the film, I’d imagine it’s in the book.

I do have one question.

I don’t agree or disagree but I often hear reviewers being negative towards characters that weren’t necessary. Why is this?

Do you just think a film should be as compact as possible in regards to screentime and amount of characters or is it that you would liked to have seen the character involved more or something, seeing as you said the grandmother was played well?

Characters take up screen time… and if they’re not necessary or serve no purpose to the story… then that means when they are on screen, the story stops being told until they’re gone.

Unlike books, that can be 2000 pages long, a feature film is only between 100-200 pages. Screen time is precious. Pace is precious. When a character that doesn’t actually serve the story is on screen, those become wasted moments and it causes the film to drag.

i suppose if this film is too long, then that would maybe have saved some time, but yeah PACE, that’s where it strikes me particularly as a potential negative aspect, i don’t mind a film having wasted screen time per se, but losing pace is a no no for me.

Thanks John.

That is a good observation about them not showing the murder. Despite knowing what he did he never seemed as bad as he should have. I didn’t think of the affect it would have had if they actually showed it.

In the book she was raped and murdered. I sort of got the feeling that they were implying the rape but they never even came out and directly said it in the movie. If they only wanted to imply the rape, I imagine it would have been hard to do so, if they skipped passed it and went into a murder scene. Since the girl is so young I can understand the reason to leave rape out of the movie but it does weaken the film.

Hey John I really liked the new look of the video.
A trailer playing behind with the poster as the background is truly genius.
Gives a good feel to the video. And nice review btw.
I hope you use this style for all the coming movie reviews…Good Job! Keep it up!

A small query: Which is your most anticipated movie this year?

Hey Kal07,

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, this is how I’ll be doing my reviews from now on.

Most anticipated movie? Hard to say… probably still Iron Man 2, but I haven’t really thought about it too much.

Looking forward to “Legion” tonight.

gr8…can’t wait for Legion review. Being a Supernatural[T.V.Series] fan, I hope this type of film works.

Nice pick…I’m looking forward[way forward...lol] to your reviews on Iron Man 2 and Inception.
