Video Blog: Why Spider-Man 4′s Cancelation Is A Good Thing For Raimi And Spider-Man

Posted by on January 14, 2010 at 6:37 pm.

As you guys know, the other day I did a video getting the reaction of some of the best online film pundits regarding the news about SPider-Man 4 getting canceled. However, I never actually gave my own opinion in the video and I’ve gotten email from a bunch of you asking for my thoughts on the issue.

Well… I decided to do a video blog to lay out my thoughts. Check it out here:

What do you think?

Who is your ideal MJ? And did you see on PerezHilton where ***rumor *** someone wants Rob Pattinson for Peter?? No idea what to think…

And you already look like you’ve lost weight. Congrats!

  • John Campea

I’ve said for a long time that I think a talented undiscovered actress who captures the “feel” of MJ would have been a better choice. The movies already had lots of star power… they didn’t need MJ to be a famous actress.

    Any yes… I’ve already lost 10 pounds! :)

I agree John though I would have liked to have seen The Lizard since they spent two movies of setting him up. I wonder if it would have been different if Rami had done movies between SM1 and SM2 and between SM 2 and SM3 a la Christopher Nolan so as to focus his creative juices on something else and come back to the franchise rejuvenated. He would have still spent 10 years working on the franchise but it would have been stretched out a bit a little farther.

Regardless this is a good thing for Spider-Man (I wish that Sony would include Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe that is being created with Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor but that’s another discussion)because it allows the franchise to expand and comeback stronger than ever.

By the way John, do you think that Rami will stay on as a Producer/ Creative Consultant?

  • ADOX

hey John, wholeheartedly agree, but part of me hopes we would have been wrong and it be awesome. i adore 2, it always blows me away when he stops the train.

QUESTION why does nobody mention the fact that it was 2 films which Tobey was reported to have got a deal for, 50m was it?

if it had a 2 film story it could have been much betterwith raimi but a good chance of being a whole lot worse too lol

it’ll be hard to see someone else be Peter but I hope someone can pull it off

i doubt it will ever make the money it did again, people will be too tired of it.

LIKE u always say john, i can always watch the originals again

Honestly I believe that any movie series can continue as long as they keep it fresh, and I think that’s why the Bond franchise has survived this long.

With each new telling they should bring in fresh directors and new stories.

And I think that Sam Raimi needed this to end, so that he could get his creative juices flowing again.

Good guy turned bad guys is the heart of Spider-man Villains. These are not Superman villains where they just want to take over the world, these are villains we can sympathize with, and that what made Spiderman 1 and 2 such great films.

  • Mark

Totally agree with you John. Spiderman does need a reboot and I’ve already got a director and cast in mind.

    Director: James Cameron
    Peter Parker: Milo Ventimiglia
    Mary Jane: Amy Adams
    Mysterio: Kevin Spacey

Too bad it will never happen but what do you think John?

  • John Campea

I love it. But yeah… Cameron will never do it… and Sony wants Teenagers.

  • Corey B.

I totally agree with you John. I think it’s time for them to move on from the franchise and let Sony start over. I would love to see Raimi go back to his roots and do original films and I would love to see Toby Maguire to do more roles like “Brothers.” Overall i’m happy for the reboot.

  • Derbmeister

Great points made sir, I got a bit tired of Dunst and the role she was given with the direction they pushed MJ’s character. There are quite a bit of other complaints that I have about the whole franchise, but I’ve always loved the comics. I’m glad Tobey is out most of all, he can now put 100% in to his new Robotech project. I Feel in a way that he will eventually by type-cast as 2 characters: Spidey was his “Han Solo”, Robotech will be his “Indiana Jones”. (I hope this makes a little bit of sense to you)

  • John Campea

    Hey Derbmeister,

Sorry my man… but Maguire has no less than 12 more projects on the go… so it’ll be quite a while before he can give “100% to Robotech”. As a matter of fact, I’ll go on record and say it’ll probably never happen.

I understand what you are saying but Spider-man 3 sucked. It would have been nice to see if Raimi would have been able to make up for it.

  • Thomas

    I couldn’t agree more John. Spider-Man 1 and 2 were fantastic but Spider-Man 3 was a complete disappointment.

The reboot could be good but they should avoid retelling the origin story and already establish Spider-Man from the beginning. They could however retell the origin through a flashback told by Peter?

Also, what do you think of these picks for Peter and Mary Jane?

Spider-Man/Peter Parker: Adam Gregory or Adam Brody

Mary-Jane Watson: Grace Holley or Kelsey Sanders

  • cloud720

What about Evan Rachel Wood. i thought she would be a good replacement for Dunst, then i found out she would be playing Mary Jane in the musical.
