Why Ricky Gervais Deserved To Get Ditched And Why The HFPA Deserved What They Got

Posted by on January 19, 2011 at 2:40 pm.

In this installment of my video blog, I want to weigh in on this whole Ricky Gervais and the Golden Globes thing. I make the point that Gervais deserves to get ditched by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and not be invited to host the show again… but at the same time why the HFPA deserved every single thing Gervais said.

Check out the video and let me know your thoughts:

You’ve never said before you hated the Golden globes before. Did they do something to you? Did someone from there punch you? I mean, in the podcast you did a last month you said you didn’t hate the Golden globes. You even thought it was a better run show than the Oscars.

  • Kyle Oxenham

Although to be fair to you, I agree it was stupid for them to nominated panned films. They didn’t even give The other guys anything! Nothing! I could be wrong, but I think it as a rating of between 70% and 90% on Rotten tomatoes. I know you didn’t like it very much John, but I loved it. That’s just my opinion.

  • Chris

Kyle, at one point, John said that the Golden Globes was a much more entertaining show than the Oscars, until they started doing it right recently by taking out the montages, musical numbers, and lengthening the acceptance speeches. John’s always hated the show for what it stands for.

John, please do not stop doing these videos.

  • Michael

    Couldn’t agree more John.

Call me crazy, I loved “Burlesque” and I thought it was worthy of that nomination. But I do agree films like “Easy A”, “Get Him to the Greek”, or “Scott Pilgrim” all deserved to be there instead of “The Tourist” and “Alice in Wonderland”.

  • Mike0707

Yeah I agree John. I have to admit I was a little puzzled as to why these movies (The Tourist, Alice in Wonderland and Burlesque) were nominated for such a coveted award. The voting body is definately too small to gain any credibility or validity in their nominations.

Hey John, there’s something that came up to me after I saw this video. You have said that the Oscars are more relevant than the Golden Globes, and you base this opinion on because of the fact that less critically acclaimed films like The Tourist or Alice in Wondrland being nominated for the Golden Globes Best Picture award, yet aren’t you the one who said that all film is subjective? Aren’t you the one who said that it is arrogant to think you’re film opinion is move valid or relevant than someone else’s? So, you think the Oscars are more relevant because mostly they pick “better” films to be nominated for their Best Picture award than the Golden Globes do. I hate to say this, John, but by making this video, you are a hypocrite. Given what you said in the past, this video is just laced with layer upon layer of hypocrisy, besides your points about Ricky Gervais. Do you realize this?

No Andrew, I’ve said the Oscars are more relevant than the Globes for much bigger reasons. Go back and read my MANY articles on the matter.

Also, “THE TOURIST” had a 20% critics rating… THAT INCLUDES CRITICS FROM THE HFPA who gave it negative reviews… and then turned around to give it a “Best Picture” nomination. THAT is hypocricy… not me.

Ricky Gervais was correct… they nominated it because they wanted to make sure Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp came to their show. They didn’t nominate it because they thought it was one of the best pictures of the year.

So no, I am not a hypocrite.
