An “Arrested Development” Movie Has NOT Been Confirmed And Probably Never Will Be

AD-Movie.jpgIt happens all the time on the Movie Blog Sphere. Someone says something… and pretty soon sites are carrying huge headlines that exaggerate what was actually said. For example, a few years ago Michael Cane said that Johnny Depp should play the Riddler in the next Batman movie… before you knew it movie news blogs were filled with the headline “CONFIRMED: Johnny Depp to play the Ridder”. And obviously that never happened.

Yesterday headlines were shooting all over the blogsphere proclaiming that it has been CONFIRMED that a long awaited “Arrested Development” movie is coming. But when you stop to actually look and listen to what was really said you quickly realized that nothing of the sort has happened… and unfortunately, probably never will. Check out my video blog for why:

The problem with your analogy here — to Johnny Depp being rumored to play the Riddler — was that it was never announced by either the creators of the Batman series or Depp himself that Johnny Depp would be playing Riddler. In fact, that was just morons making shit up and posting it on the internet. No one ever believed it, but blogs ran with it because it amounted to hits.

In this case, Mitch Hurwitz and the cast of Arrested Development announced this to an instantly sold out New Yorker Festival panel in New York City. Instantly sold-out because of how much real live human beings with actual physical money want to see this thing happen. Additionally, Ron Howard, a big-time Hollywood producer and filmmaker, is onboard in trying to get the series/movie made. Additionally, there’s a pretty massive demand for this thing to happen, due to Arrested Development being available (and widely watched) on DVD and Netflix Instant. Additionally, AD isn’t going to break the bank in terms of budget, so it’s unlikely that money will get in the way of production.I’m not saying that an Arrested Development film is definitely going to be made. I would wager that it would be. Friendly wager. Winner gets to say how right he was. But I also admit that it’s not, as of yet, a sure thing. Out of curiosity — if you end up being wrong, will you follow this post up with an “I was totally wrong” blog-post?

Well… I’m not wrong.  Because my main point here is that no one… not Ron Howard, not Mitch Hurwitz, no studio person… NO ONE has “confirmed” there WILL be an Arrested Development movie, despite what the movie news blogs are headlining.

I’m not willing to say there will NEVER be an Arrested Development movie, but yeah, I highly doubt there will be.  In the event that I’m wrong about that (I’ll be happy), I’ll certainly say something (like I did with the GI Joe movie), but I wonder if the people who are telling me I’m crazy will do the same and fill my comments with “you were right” notes.  ;)

And the “demand” for this movie is very small.  Half the comments on my Youtube page right now are “I’ve never even heard of this show”.  And yes, the money would be an issue… paying all those folks isn’t going to be free, and a major studio isn’t going to make a $10 feature, not to mention the $30 million they’ll have to pay just for marketing the thing.

Well, when I said ‘if you’re wrong,’ I was referring to the statement in the second half of your headline — and I paraphrase, ‘Arrested Development Will Probably Never Be Made.’ If you’re wrong about THAT, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

To your second point, I will happily come back and write “I was wrong, you were right,” if and when that I’m wrong. One last thing — are you a fan of Arrested Development?

    Did you watch the video?

No. I read the blog portion.

My whole point and position is in the video, as well as the answer to your question.

  • http://benjaminandrewmoore.com Benjamin Andrew Moore

Alas, that means I will never know the answer…

Wait, wait, wait — so half the comments on your YouTube page are [fill in the blank]? That’s anecdotal, man. I have no idea who your commenters are. Literally, every single one of them could be from Cambodia. I mean, at the very least, they’ve only arrived on the internet in the past twenty-four hours, considering they’ve never heard of Arrested Development.

Then there’s no point in trying to have a discussion about it, if you won’t watch it.

    Haha, indeed!

I’m a huge fan of the series and have watched it a million times. Great characters and probably the best writing for a comedy series I’ve ever come across.
You are right in saying they haven’t officially ‘confirmed’ that the movie will go ahead. But I don’t agree that it’s impossible for them to make it appeal to a wider audience. From what I’ve heard Ron Howard and Mitch Hurwitz say about the movie and the episodes…I’m starting to think that the episodes will be a catch up purely for the fans and the movie will be based around ‘an event’ or something that those episodes will be building up to. For example: a wedding/funeral (though we’ve had enough of those in the show already!)

Of course it’ll all fall to marketing to see if the movie could be successful or not., and I do understand the point that you’re making, but I still think it’s very possible to create a ‘situational’ comedy feature film based on a less-than-successful tv show.

    John –
I completely understand where you are coming from.
My wife actually had to make me put a stop to my ‘talking about movies that don’t exist’ habit.
Even after watching your video and knowing this I almost told her about the proposed ‘The Twilight Zone’ movie that AICN posted about.
(Because I know she would like this idea…especially with Nolan possibly doing it…there I go…)
I took a moment and didn’t do it.
I wait to talk to her about movies when the trailers arrive.
Thanks to her help I don’t talk to other people about movies until filming has begun.
(I used to be like every other fan boy and play the ‘your dream cast’ game ala Wizard.)

Confirmation isn’t the surety as you have mentioned in the post. It was shocking news for me when they didn’t casted johnny depp into the batman series. Its the loss for their movie. They can’t find the better actor in than johnny for such roles.
